Beginner Level

Brand New Beginner Bridge Part 1! Thursdays 7—9 PM at the PUMC* site. For those who’ve never played before or who haven’t played in many years and want to start over. Topics: point count evaluation, opening bids and responses, basic play of the hand techniques. Six weeks, starts Sept. 13 and ends Oct. 18. Beginner Bridge Part 2. Thursdays 7—9 PM at the PUMC* site. Basic bidding and responses are reviewed as well as an introduction to a few new bids (takeout doubles, preempts, overcalls, and the strong 2C opening bid). This is also a great class for those who played years ago and want to get back into bridge and modernize their skills. Six weeks, starts Oct. 25 and ends Dec. 6. (No class on Nov. 22.) Beginner Bridge Part 3: Introduction to Play of the Hand. Mondays 10 AM—Noon at the PUMC* site. Now that you have a basic knowledge of bidding, let us show you how to plan the play of the hand. Usually there is some method that must be used to actually make your contract. We will show you the methods of counting your tricks and recognizing how to find the extra ones that you will need. Includes: Promotion, Length, Finessing, and How to Get Rid of Losers. Six weeks, starts Sept. 17 and ends Oct. 29. Beginner Bridge 4: Introduction to Basic Conventions. Mondays 10 AM—Noon at PUMC*. Topics: Stayman, Jacoby Transfers, Weak 2’s, the Strong 2C Opener and Blackwood. We spend up to 1-1/2 weeks on each topic. These are conventions that you must learn to complete your basic bidding arsenal. After this class you will graduate to intermediate level. Six weeks, starts Nov. 5 and ends Dec. 17. Polishing Your Bridge, Parts 1 and 2. Mondays 7—9 PM at the PUMC* site. Taught by Leslie and Charlie. One of our most popular classes; students are amazed at the amount of new information that they acquire. You don’t have to take both parts; each chapter stands alone. Two six-week courses. (No class Nov. 12.) Topics: The “Weak Freak”; Don’t Rebid a  Five-Card Suit When You Have a Reasonable Alternative; Responder’s Only Forcing Bid; When a New Suit by Responder is not Forcing; and the Decider and Describer (2 weeks).

Cuebids and Negative Doubles. Tuesdays 10 AMNoon at the PUMC* site. Weeks 1 & 2: Cuebids to Show and Ask for Notrump Stoppers; Week 3: Using a Cuebid as Stayman when Partner’s 1NT Opening is Overcalled; Week 4: What Does it Mean when You Make a Takeout Double and Partner Cuebids?; Weeks 5 & 6: Takeout Doubles by the Responder (aka Negative Doubles). Six weeks, starts Sept. 18 and ends Oct. 30. (No class on Oct. 2.) Major Suit Raises Part 2. Tuesdays 10 AMNoon at the PUMC* site. Week 1: A Review of Concepts from Part 1; Weeks 2 & 3: Combined Review of Jacoby 2NT Raises and Splinter Raises (finding those 28 point slams!); Week 4: The 1NT Forcing Response; Week 5: 2/1 Game Forcing System; and Week 6: Light Opening Bids and Drury. Supervised Play for Advanced Intermediates. Thursdays 10 AM—Noon at PUMC*. Taught by Leslie. Choosing the right tool at the right time is done through experience. These are new hands using several topics you have already learned. You play the contract you get to, then we discuss the best contract and how to play it. Topics: Week 1: Michaels Cuebid—Competing with a Two-Suited Hand; Week 2: Unusual Notrump—More Competition with Two-Suited Hands; Weeks 3 & 4: A Combined review of Michaels and the Unusual Notrump; Weeks 5 & 6: Cappelletti—Competing Over a 1NT Opening. Six weeks, starts Oct. 25 and ends Dec. 6. (No class on Nov. 22.) Signaling, Parts 1 and 2—Introduction to Defense. Thursdays 10 AM—Noon at PUMC*. Taught by Charlie. Learn how to signal your partner about what’s in your hand. Partner will start playing like a genius after this course (and that should make you very happy). Two six-week courses.  Advanced Duplicate Conventions Your Partner Wants You to Learn. Wednesdays 10 AMNoon at the PUMC* site. Week 1: New Minor Forcing—When responder bids a major, it shows four; If he bids it twice, it shows six. So, what does he do when he has five of them?; Week 2: Lead Directing Doubles—Telling Partner What to Lead; Weeks 3 & 4: Soloway Jump Shifts—Finally! Strong Jump Shifts by the Responder!; Weeks 5 & 6: 1430 Roman Keycard Blackwood—Update Your Ace-Asking Convention. Six weeks, starts Sept. 12 and ends Oct. 24. (No class Sept. 19.) Declarer: Learn to Create Extra Tricks Like Magic. Wednesdays 10 AMNoon at the PUMC* site. Week 1: Establishing Dummy’s Long Suit; Week 2: Establishing Declarer’s Long Suit; Week 3: How to Set up a Crossruff; Week 4: How to Play in a 4-4 Fit; Weeks 5 & 6: The Mysterious Endplay.
