Credit Card Processing

You can now pay for your classes with a credit card using this website’s registration page. Payment is made through the secure services of Authorize.net. No credit card information is stored by bridgeteacher.com.

If you are using make up coupons, please note that the use of these coupons is limited to two (2) per class.

Where:  All classes are six weeks long and held at our regular site in Potomac, MD.  PUMC (Potomac United Methodist Church Activity Center) 9908 So. Glen Road, Potomac, MD  20854.)  The entrance to the large parking lot is on the Falls Road side of the street. Facing the building, please park on the left side or in the center of the parking lot.

Tuition rates: Tuition for all of the classes is $150 in advance ($175 at the door).    All of the classes can be paid using our website or sent to: Leslie Shafer, 9200 Edwards Way, Apt. 1115, Adelphi, MD 20783.   You may choose a pay as you go option which is $30 per class.  (Note our new home address!!]  

Most of the classes are taught by Leslie & Charlie together unless otherwise specified.  (Two of the classes are taught by Charlie:  Thursday AM Beginner 3 class and the Monday Night Beginner 1 class.)

Beginner Level:

Brand New Beginner Bridge Part 1! Mondays. 7—9 PM at the UMC* site. For those who’ve never played before or who haven’t played in many years and want to start over. Topics: point count evaluation, opening bids and responses, basic play of the hand techniques. Six weeks, starts Sept. 11 and ends Oct. 23. (No class on Oct. 9.) Beginner Bridge Part 2. Mondays. 7—9 PM at the UMC* site. Basic bidding and responses are reviewed as well as an introduction to a few new bids (takeout doubles, preempts, overcalls, and the strong 2C opening bid). This is also a great class for those who played years ago and want to get back into bridge and modernize their skills. Six weeks, starts Oct. 30 and ends Dec. 4. Beginner Bridge Part 3: Introduction to Play of the Hand. Thursdays 10 AM—Noon at the UMC* site. Now that you have a basic knowledge of bidding, let us show you how to plan the play of the hand. Usually there is some method that must be used to actually make your contract. We will show you the methods of counting your tricks and recognizing how to find the extra ones that you will need. Includes: Promotion, Length, Finessing, and How to Get Rid of Losers. Six weeks, starts Sept. 14 and ends Oct. 26. Beginner Bridge 4: Introduction to Basic Conventions. Thursdays 10 AM—Noon at the UMC* site. Topics: Stayman, Jacoby Transfers, Weak 2’s, and the Strong 2§ Opener and Blackwood. We will spend up to 1-1/2 weeks on each topic. These are the conventions that you must learn to complete your basic bidding arsenal. After this class you will progress on to the intermediate level. Six weeks, starts Nov. 2 and ends Dec. 14. Intermediate Level:

Polishing your Bridge, Parts 1 and 2. Mondays 7—9 PM at the UMC* site. This is one of our most popular classes and students are amazed at the amount of new information that they acquire. You do not have to take both parts to enjoy this class, each chapter stands alone. Two six-week courses. Part 1: Six weeks, starts Sept. 11 and ends Oct. 23. (No class on Oct. 9.) Topics: Categorize your Strength; Which Suit Do I Bid First?; The Best Opening Bid Ever; Bidding With Minimum Hands; New Ways to Invite Game; and Major-Suit Raises (and the Losing Trick Count).    Note Evening Time!

Part 2: Six weeks, starts Oct. 30 and ends Dec. 4. Topics: The “Weak Freak”; Don’t Rebid a  Five-Card Suit When You Have a Reasonable Alternative; Responder’s Only Forcing Bid; When a New Suit by Responder is not Forcing; and the Decider and Describer (2 weeks).    Note Evening Time!

Slam Biddding! Tuesdays 10 AMNoon at the UMC* site. Popular tools to get to those elusive slam contracts. Topics include: Week 1: Jump Shifts by the Opener; Week 2: Reverses (You MUST attend this one!); Week 3: Combined review of weeks 1 & 2; Week 4: Not So Basic Blackwood; Week 5: Control Bidding to Slam; Week 6: Combined review of weeks 4 & 5. 2/1 Game Forcing System. Tuesdays 10 AMNoon at the UMC* site. You will need to be a solid intermediate up through an advanced-level student to learn all the bells and whistles of this popular system. Weeks 1 & 2: 1NT Forcing; Weeks 3 & 4: Two Over One Game Forcing Auctions. Weeks 5 & 6: Mixed Review of both topics. Six weeks, starts Oct. 31 and ends Dec. 5. Signaling, Parts 1 and 2—Introduction to Defense. Thursdays 10 AM—Noon at the UMC* site. Learn how to signal your partner about what’s in your hand. Partner will start playing like a genius after this course (and that should make you very happy). Two six-week courses are offered. Part 2: Six weeks, starts Nov 2 and ends Dec. 14. (No class on Nov. 23.) Topics: Using Attitude Signals; Signaling When Discarding; Leading From Interior Sequences; and Leading 4th Best.     

Advanced Level:

Endplays, Puppet Stayman and 1430 RKC Blackwood! Mondays 10 AMNoon at the UMC* site. Weeks 1 & 2: Endplays: How to force your opponents to lead a certain suit for you. Weeks 3 & 4: Puppet Stayman: Opening 1NT could be done with a five-card major!! How could you ask partner if he did that? Weeks 5 & 6: Keycard Blackwood 1430: Besides the four aces, we can now find out if partner has the trump king or queen. Six weeks, starts Sept. 11 and ends Oct. 23. (No class on Oct. 9.) Bridge: The Final Frontier. Mondays 10 AMNoon at the UMC* site. These are the lessons of the Starship Kantar; who’s six-week mission is to seek out new information that will allow you to boldly go into the future. Of all the lessons you’ve had so far, these are our favorites. Week 1: If responder’s 1S promises four, and rebidding them promises six, how does he show five? Week 2: How Defenders Recognize a Dangerous Dummy—Cash Out Time! Week 3: Don’t Take That Finesse! Week 4: That Crucial First Trick! Week 5: Using Little Cards for Transportation! Advanced Supervised Bidding, Play and Defense, Parts 8 and 9. Wednesdays 10 AMNoon at the UMC* site. This has become one of our most popular classes.
