Fall 2019 Bridge Class Schedule
(Sept. through mid-December)
Location: Potomac United Methodist Church’s Activity Center Building. We hold many classes a week at this site. The address is 9908 South Glen Rd., Potomac, MD 20854. It is at the intersection of Democracy Blvd. and Falls Rd. The entrance to the parking lot is on Falls Road. (Facing the building, park on the left side or in the center of the lot.)
Tuition: All classes cost $156. Please register through our Registration Page. When you come to your first class, you will receive a ticket book containing 6 tickets, one for each class. The cost is $26 per ticket. If you miss a class, tickets can be used for future classes, credit for the Wednesday game (with reimbursement for overage) or newsletter purchases. Brand New Beginner Bridge Part 1! Thursdays 10 AM—Noon. Taught by Charlie. For those who’ve never played before or who haven’t played in many years and want to start over. Topics: point count evaluation, opening bids and responses, basic play of the hand techniques. Six weeks, starts September 12 and ends October 17. Registration is required.
Beginner Bridge Part 2. Thursdays 10 AM—Noon. Taught by Charlie. Basic bidding and responses are reviewed as well as an introduction to a few new bids (takeout doubles, preempts, overcalls, and the strong 2§ opening bid). This is also a great class for those who played years ago and want to get back into bridge and modernize their skills. Six weeks, starts October 24 and ends December 5 (no class November 28).
Beginner Bridge Part 3: Introduction to Play of the Hand. Wednesdays 10 AM—Noon. Taught by Charlie. Now that you have a basic knowledge of bidding, let us show you how to plan the play of the hand. Usually there is some method that must be used to actually make your contract. We will show you the methods of counting your tricks and recognizing how to find the extra ones that you will need. Includes: Promotion, Length, Finessing, and How to Get Rid of Losers. Six weeks, starts September 11 and ends October 23 (no class October 9).
Beginner Bridge Part 4: Introduction to Basic Conventions. Wednesdays 10 AM—Noon. Taught by Charlie. Topics: Stayman, Jacoby Transfers, the Strong 2§ Opener (and Blackwood). We will spend 2 weeks on each topic. These are conventions that you must learn to complete your basic bidding arsenal. After this class you will graduate to intermediate level!! Six weeks, starts October 30 and ends December 4.
The Impact of Opening Leads Against Notrump Contracts. Mondays 10 AM—Noon. Taught by Leslie and Charlie. Many players only lead “4th from longest and strongest.” That’s actually our FIFTH choice of opening leads! Setting the opponents is always a thrill. Partner will start defending like a genius after this course (and that should make you very happy). Audrey Grant’s book with all deals available for $10. Six weeks, starts September 9 and ends October 28 (no class September 30 or October 14).
Improving Your Judgment—Doubles. Mondays 10 AM—Noon Taught by Leslie and Charlie. Having trouble with doubles? Doubles are THE most flexible way to compete in an auction. How should partner answer? Should the takeout doubler bid again? The answers will be revealed in this class. Audrey Grant’s book with all deals available for $10. Six weeks, starts November 4 and ends December 16 (no class November 11).
Leslie Sez! Mondays 7—9 PM. Taught by Charlie. Want to hear Leslie’s voice in your head more often? Take this class! Week 1: TNT (Think Notrump); Week 2: Keep Winners, Throw Losers (not as easy as it sounds); Week 3: The Rule of 20 (opening light in 1st or 2nd seat); Week 4: Rule of Margaritas (opening light in 3rd seat—Yeehaw!!); Week 5: When NOT to use “Eight Ever, Nine Never”; Week 6: Is Notrump of Major Importance? (Choosing.) Six weeks, starts September 9 and ends October 28 (no class September 30 or October 14). Evenings!
Avoiding Common Bridge Dilemmas. Mondays 7—9 PM. Taught by Charlie. Topics include: Weeks 1: Rule of 7—When to take your ace as declarer; Weeks 2 & 3: Reopening Doubles—How to get your side back into the auction; Weeks 4, 5 & 6: How to Play NT Like an Expert!! Six weeks, starts Nov. 4 and ends Dec. 16 (no class Nov.11). Note Evening Time!
Sidestepping Frequent Mistakes. Thursdays 10 AM—Noon. Taught by Leslie (taking over for Charlie). Topics include: Weeks 1 & 2: When to Pass With Good Hands!!; Week 3: High Card From the Short Side—NOT SO FAST!!!; Week 4: Law of Total Tricks—When to bid in competitive auctions; Week 5: Using a Cuebid as a Strong Raise in Competition; Week 6: Sacrifices! Six weeks, starts September 12 and ends October 17.
Slam Bidding. Thursdays 10 AM—Noon. Taught by Leslie (taking over for Charlie). Topics include: Week 1: Beyond Basic Blackwood; Week 2: Reverses (Don’t miss this one!!); Week 3: Jump Shifts by the Opener; Week 4: Jump Rebids—are they forcing? Week 5: Notrump Slams and Gerber; Week 6: Control Bidding (a different way of getting to slam). Six weeks, starts October 24 and ends December 5 (no class November 28).
Polishing Your Bridge. Thursdays 7—9 PM. Taught by Charlie. This is our most well received intermediate bridge class! We’re going to add some sparkle to your basic knowledge. Don’t worry about missing any classes as each week stands alone. Topics: Categorize your Strength; Which Suit Do I Bid First?; The Best Opening Bid Ever; Bidding With Minimum Hands; New Ways to Invite Game; Major Suit Raises (and the Losing Trick Count); The “Weak Freak”; Don’t Rebid a Five-Card Suit When You Have a Reasonable Alternative; Responder’s Only Forcing Bid; When a New Suit by Responder is not Forcing; and the Decider and Describer (2 weeks). Twelve weeks, starts September 12 and ends December 5 (no class November 28). Note Evening Time!
Advanced Supervised Bidding, Play and Defense. Tuesdays 10 AM—Noon. Taught by Leslie and Charlie. Most of our flashes of brilliance at the bridge table come after a failure. (Sort of a “D’oh!!” moment.) We have assembled some of the most inspiring teaching deals we’ve ever seen and mixed them together so you won’t know in advance if it’s a bidding, play or defense problem.
